Sherlock's Return

Happy Saturday everyone!

While I'm still mourning the loss of the 11th Doctor, at the same time I'm in high spirits for the return of Sherlock!  It's been what, nearly three years?  Okay, I looked it up.  The Reichenbach Fall aired on January 15th 2012!  Let me do some quick math here... oh alright, 1 year, 351 days.  But it seems like it's been three years.

While most mysteries don't generally present much of a challenge for me I have to admit: this one's a doozy.  Well done BBC.  Well done.  I look forward to discovering the truth this Wednesday and seeing if any of my theories were correct.
I wrote a post last month talking a little bit about some theories.  Click here if you'd like to read it.

Oh and another thing.  Some people have talked about not saying anything on any social media (facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc.) for a few days after the new episode comes out as pay back for series three taking so long after leaving off on such a big cliff hanger.  Please do NOT do this.  TV shows are rated based on the talk about them the first few days after they come out, and this decides whether or not they get another season.
Keeping quiet could kill Sherlock again.  I repeat: do NOT keep quiet!  If you want to pull some kind of practical joke on the people responsible for making us wait for so long, fine, I don't care.  But don't hurt the show!

As usual I'm sharing all the trailers I've found so far concerning the newest series, including a mini-episode!  I was very excited at this.  Thank you BBC!  This is great!  We've been complaining for so long about little short teasers, maybe they did this just to shut us up for a while.

and a special mini'sode: Many Happy Returns

I think it's interesting that Anderson is the only one that sees it.  Also Lestrade mentioned Anderson had given up his job for this.  He became so obsessed with trying to convince everyone Sherlock is still alive he lost his job on the police force!
I also had a Doctor Who moment and thought Sherlock was going to do something like 10 did in Blink.

Oh and I almost forgot the pictures.  Caution: May contain spoilers...

The Time of the Doctor is at Hand

I have been very distracted lately.  Not in a normal way.  Ever since May 18th (the date when the Name of the Doctor aired), pretty much all I did was research and get news about the 50th.  I was so consumed waiting for that to come out that I almost forgot the little bits of news I'd picked up along the way about the special coming out in December.  Well now I'm back on the scent.  Supposedly this is going to be Matt's last episode as the 11th Doctor.  But remember: Rule 1.  Steven Moffat lies.
I know that Matt Smith said he was leaving Doctor Who, and I believe him... but he didn't say when.
The detective part of my brain kicked into gear the second I started watching the trailers and saw the pictures.
I got these pictures off of BBC's website.
Take a look at the first two pictures.  Where have we seen something like this before?
That's right, Journey's End.
The first time you watch this you think the Doctor's going to regenerate, right?  Well he doesn't.  Instead he pulls a metacrisis and stays alive, at least for a little while longer.
Could 11 do something similar in this episode?  What if he creates another meta-crisis clone who gets downloaded to the same computer that River was saved to so they can live happily ever after together?
*tears*
Pardon me while I go cry in a corner.

Okay I'm back.  Another reason I suspect something fishy is up is that it's been mentioned Peter Capaldi doesn't take over as the Doctor until next August.  Maybe they'll let Matt have a few specials in between now and then like they did with David Tennant.  He got five more episodes after Journey's End.  Which everyone back then suspected was his last.  I really think this would be fun but whatever happens I'm sure it will be good.  I'll probably shed a few tears over 11's passing but I've already survived a few regenerations and know that they always do a fantastic job of picking the next Doctor.  I'm sure the BBC won't let us down now.
In addition to the pictures above there has also been a few new trailers released for The Time of the Doctor.  And here they are,
Any more videos that I find after this I will post here as well, so keep an eye out for updates.
My apologies again but my internet / computer went hay wire again so right now I can only post these as links.  I will come back and redo this later when my computer decides to behave.

Next week I'll be talking about spoilers, trailers, and leaked news for Sherlock series 3!

Doctor Who Legacy Game Review

Just before Thanksgiving a new Doctor Who mobile game was released.  I was going to do a review on this that weekend but then decided on writing about the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode.  So here I am finally getting around to this.

A few pros and cons:
Pro: The game is free on the iTunes app store (I'm pretty sure it's available for other devices too).

Pro: Basic game play is like bejeweled, if you like bejeweled.

Con: Basic game play is like bejeweled, if you don't like bejeweled.
If you've never played bejeweled before then disregard either of the last two statements.

Pro:  It's about the Doctor!

Con: There seems to be some kind of story in the first part of the game (the tutorial), but after that it's mostly just matching colors and trying to beat the bad guys before they take down your health bar before you run out of time.  Also with what little story line it's a bit confusing.  At first it's going along the lines that you just met the Doctor and are helping him out, but after that there is no mention of you and you seem to be playing as the Doctor.

Pro:  If you have played bejeweled before and whether you did, or didn't like it there are still some differences.
The game uses slightly different strategies.  As you go through the different levels fighting different bad guys, from the Silence, to the Weeping Angels you can collect different time fragments and / or companions, even different Doctors!  Time fragments can be used to get level ups, while the companions can build up your team to make it stronger.

Con:  You can only play it online.  If you have wifi at home or are playing it on your phone this isn't really a big deal, but for me playing it on my iPod, with the closest hotspot being almost eight miles away it kind of sucks.

Con:  The pause button.  (Close up of IMG_3009).  It's super tiny.  I don't know if it was just me or my iPod, but I have to try multiple times to hit this button.   ->

Game play:
Starting off, the first time you push the button to play it will take you through the basics of how to play, plus a short "story" introduction.  You start out with Madame Vastra as a companion and pick up more friends along the way.  You have six slots to fill with one Doctor and up to five other people.  I guess the TARDIS can only hold six passengers.  You can only play as one Doctor at a time.  Say for instance in one level I found 10, so the next round I replaced 11 for 10.  However you also need to watch their different strengths (powers).  11's power is a super attack against your enemies, where as 10's heals you.  The more you use a person on your team to fight the monsters the faster they level up.  Each time you get a new level up you gain one point which you can use to increase one of three areas for that character.

If you ever forget and want to check and see which characters have a level up point available you just go to the menu.            ->

Tap the button labeled TARDIS.  Then tap the tab at the top of the screen labeled Companions.

A green arrow on a character's picture will indicate they have just leveled up and you will have a new point waiting for you.  This is when some tactical thinking comes into play.

Let's see an example of how you can decide what to do with this level up.  If you were to tap on one of these companions with a green arrow you'll see a screen like this:

Here Porridge has 1 new point (Where it says Points Left).  He's already strong in Attack points so I'll choose to either increase the health bar, or how fast he heals.

I chose to increase the health bar since I'm going up against some pretty tough enemies.  Once you hit Confirm that locks in your changes.  Be aware though!  That reset points button down at the bottom is a little deceiving.  You have to pay time crystals to reset it if you ever want to redistribute the points.
Where ever you choose to place these points it goes toward your total team.  So my changes to Porridge will increase my team's health bar.

So how do you use different characters to attack?  It's simple.

Notice how each of the characters have different colors behind their picture?  You just match three or more jewels of the same color in a row and that will cause that character to attack.  Matching pink heals you.  In the image to the right I had just matched blue, which caused some more black to fall in to place and match as well, this made a combo making their attack even stronger.  So 11 (blue), Porridge (black), and the spoon head Doctor (also blue), all attacked.

All together I thought this was a brilliant game.  It combines a popular mobile game with one of my favorite TV shows in a brilliant way, which added more elements to the game.  Again, it all just depends on your preference, but even for someone who's never seen the show, or played bejeweled, I still think they would enjoy it.

Helpful Extra:
After you hit start there will be a sign at the bottom of the screen.

Tap that and it will take you to a web page.  Through the month of December, at least, they will be giving out a 16 digit code.  Write the code down on a piece of paper.  Go back to the game and press the menu button.  Tap options.
<- Then select the Promo tab.
There you can enter your code and get rewards.

It varies from day to day so for instance one time I got a new out fit for 10, another time I got a few time fragments.

This is my first attempt at a game review.  Please let me know if there is anything I could do differently to make it better, more clear, etc.  I'm not afraid of (and even welcome) criticism if it points out what I'm doing wrong so I can write better in the future.
If you have any suggestions for other games to review (I mostly just play mobile games from iTunes) please suggest away in the comments!

Another Sherlock Trailer!

BBC released another trailer for Sherlock just a few days ago.  Note to BBC: And thank you so much for giving us a date this time!  I am so pumped!

I found it humorous yet sad at the same time.  Sherlock has no concept of normal people that it didn't even cross his mind that John would have moved on.

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Easter Eggs Continued

Here it is as promised: Part 2 of Doctor Who easter eggs from the 50th anniversary special.  And apologies for not being to post this all in one go (but this is a rather big list).

Continuing where I left off...

"The wicked witch of the well."
Reference to Hide:
"The witch of the well."
"Timey what?  Timey wimey?"  "I have no idea where he picks that stuff up."
As (we should) all know 10 was the first Doctor to use this phrase in Blink.

The BLACK ARCHIVE.  *cue dramatic music*
This could have been a whole seperate post of all the things in here so I'll just point out a few (which actually means a lot).  First thing I would like to mention is the photo board, this is the equivalent of the Doctor's facebook page.

Clara's "Last visit"
I'm not sure if this is a future reference and that just hasn't happened for Clara yet, or it could have been one of her "copies" from when she jumped into the Doctor's time stream (The Name of the Doctor), scattering herself along his time stream.
More angles of the photo board:

Captain Jack's vortex manipulator.

Rose's gun?

A part from the robot Gadget from The Waters of Mars... maybe?

River Song's shoes.  (The Time of Angels).

Amy's sonic probe, the pinwheel from her garden (in the background), and Torchwood's magna-clamps (in foreground).

This thing looks like a piece of 11's first TARDIS.

Dalek commander's armor from the episode Journeys End.

In the background sitting on top of a box is the gun that the human-daleks used in Evolution of the Daleks.

A cyberman's head... duh.

^ Mickey's gun to the left? and Rose's gun on the shelf in the background again?

I know there was a lot more to the Black Archive but that is a lot of stuff, and it's kind of hard to get good shots of them.

"Spoilers."

River Song's favorite line.

"So they're both you then?"
"Yes.  You've met them before."
Definitely a reference to The Name of the Doctor.  The real Clara had some recollections of her other selves lives.

And yes I know, it isn't really an easter egg but it's just so refreshing to finally have a reason for a villian monologue, other than the cliched: "Let me show you what a genius I am for thinking up this plan by telling you the whole thing before you die," reason.  Just another small bit of the many reasons I love this show.  They come up with so many new witty things.

"Is there a lot of this in the future?"  "It does start to happen, yeah."

If I'm correct there was no kissing in the classic Doctor Who episodes.  The first Doctor to actually kiss a companion was the 8th Doctor, and I believe it was only in one scene (I'll correct this later after I've re-watched 8's movie if I need to).  Before that the Doctor never really had a romantic relationship with any of his companions, it wasn't really until Rose came along.

Why Elizabeth was so ticked at the Doctor in The Shakespeare Code.  The Doctor ditched her then reappeared years later, so she was a little ticked, only for him it hadn't happened yet.

"Right then.  Back to the future."

Just the fact that he said "Back to the Future," is enough to make any sci-fi fan go crazy happy.

"Hey look: the round things."

<A previous interior of the TARDIS.

"Oh you've redecorated."
"I don't like it."

"Oh?  Yeah?  You never do."
This happened in an older episode where the Doctor meets himself, and he has used this line a few times when visiting friends, hence 11's retort:

...

"Did you just say Bad Wolf?"

< The look on his face #priceless

"This is the Doctor!"

1's camieo.  I love it!
Followed by this:
"You might say I've been doing this all my lives."
Appearances of other Doctors:

"All 13."
Died here when I saw this.  It was just too much.  For those of you who haven't been keeping up with Doctor Who news, the christmas episode coming up is going to be 11's last (until he comes back for a special like this, which I have no doubt he'll do).  He's going to regenerate and Peter Capaldi has been chosen to play Doctor number 12, although in this case there are thirteen versions of him but he doesn't consider himself a doctor in his ninth regeneration, not 9.  9 is actually his tenth regeneration but considered the ninth Doctor.

"I hope the ears are a bit less conspicuous this time."

Sorry Doctor, I think you just jinxed it.
Didn't think you got to see him regenerate into 9?

You can see 9's eyes.

More TARDIS interior design... as wall art?

Trenzalor.  Future and past reference here.  In The Name of the Doctor this is where the great Intelligence tricks the Doctor into coming, which is apparantly where the Doctor dies later.  And it can be assumed from the new trailer for the x-mas special...
...that we're going to be finding more about it, if not visiting it again.

"I don't want to go."
10's last words before he regenerates.  Don't worry 10, we don't want you to go either...
Also this could be a foreshadowing of 11's coming regenertion.
And I'd like to point out that this show is taking place shortly before each of these three Doctors become the next Doctor.  In 8.5's case it happened in the episode.

Two words:  Tom Baker.  End of story.
For those of you who are completly clueless: Tom Baker played the fourth Doctor and is probably the most iconic Doctor of them all.  Nearly everyone assoctiates his face and the multi-colored super long scarf that he wore for most of his run as the Doctor.  The scarf that Osgood wears looks a lot like his only it's not as long as the original.  The original scarf was around 30 feet long, if you watch the old shows and base the length of his scarf on how long it is on him you can make a good estimate.

And I should know because I bribed my crotcheting crazy sister to make one for me based on a pattern I found on a fellow Whovian blogger's page.

I measured my scarf and it's 32 feet 8 inches long, but it's not an exact replica.

"If I were you."
My head hurts trying to figure out this bit.  But I'm thinking how this could fit in is shortly before this 11 mentioned something about time lines being out of sync.  It could be since events in his life changed so much that 4 didn't regenerate when he did in the classic series but lived longer.  The events of this episode seemed to have created a parallel universe to a lot of what happened in the old TV show.

Home the long way around
From the very beginning the Doctor has been running away from Gallifrey, then it was destroyed and he couldn't think of anything but getting back to it, and now it's lost.  I think the next big chapter in the Doctor's life will be trying to find Gallifrey and bringing it back.  Maybe some day in the future we'll be seeing a few more Time Lords that aren't trapped inside a time "bubble,"  Maybe the Doctor could pick one up as a companion, like Susan or Romona.

And again, not technically an easter egg... but still, these are the best credits of all time (and space).

What I'd like to know is why wasn't Peter Capaldi's name in here?

So that's it!  I've looked over many articles talking about all the different easter eggs hidden in the fiftieth anniversary episode, and I know there are quite a few more eggs than what I've mentioned here but this would be a very big list indeed if I were to add ALL of them, so these are just my favorites and the ones that I noticed (even before reading all the other egg pages).  I hope you enjoyed me going on and on and on about this.  I know I did, even though it seemed like a chore on about picture number 78, pausing and playing the show every few seconds to get another picture, because there was a reference there.  Well have a good time!  Until next week!  Geronimo!
